Type 002 is the name for the class of Chinese (belonging to the PRC fleet) aircraft carriers with classic propulsion. The first unit of this class is the Shandong (side number: 17). The keel for this unit was laid in 2015, the launch took place in April 2017, and the commissioning to service in PLAN (abbreviation: People's Liberation Army Navy) took place on December 17, 2019. The total length of the ship is 315 meters, the overall width is 75 meters, and the full displacement is about 70,000 tons. The maximum speed is slightly above 30 knots. The on-board armament consists of three Type 1130 CIWS artillery sets and three HQ-10 anti-aircraft missile launchers. The aircraft carrier can conduct air operations with up to 40 planes and helicopters. Perhaps, however, this is an understated number. Shandong is the first, fully built in a domestic shipyard, aircraft carrier in the PRC Navy (abbreviation: PLAN). The shipyard belonging to Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company located in Dalian City, Liaoning Province. It is fairly widely accepted that the new Chinese aircraft carrier is structurally based on the Liaoning solutions, which in turn was a de facto post-Soviet Varyag-class aircraft carrier. This is indicated by the construction of the superstructure, as well as the similar placement of the so-called ski-jump jumps for in-flight planes. But without a doubt Shandong has much more modern electronic equipment (probably including AESA radars), a redesigned flight deck, and eventually an electromagnetic catapult will be installed on it.
