Wympieł (current full name: Board "W" of the FSB Special Purpose Center) is a Soviet, and currently Russian, special unit, which was established in the summer of 1981. The initiators of its creation were the generals of the KGB: Yuri Andropov and Yuri Drozdov. The first commander of the newly formed unit was captain Ewald Kozlov. The task of the unit was to carry out activities mainly outside the borders of the USSR. It carried out subversive missions in the enemy's territory, searched for and eliminated ex-agents of the Soviet intelligence who had escaped to the West, performed strictly intelligence activities and took part in the most difficult missions in the enemy's territory. In the initial period of its existence, it carried out many tasks in Afghanistan, in which the Soviet Union conducted military operations in the years 1979-1989. After the collapse of the USSR, the unit came under the authority of the FSB (Federal Security Service) and was used primarily in the First and Second Chechen Wars (1994-1996 and 1999-2009). Currently, it is considered a special unit dedicated to anti-partisan and anti-terrorist activities.
