At the start of World War I, in August 1914, the army of imperial Germany was considered the best and most efficient in the Old Continent. Such a conviction resulted mainly from the fame of the victories won in the course of the wars with Austria in 1866 and with France in the years 1870-1871. Also, many organizational solutions used at that time in the Prussian army, and later in the German army (e.g. strategic railway lines or mobilization techniques) were copied in other European countries. As in the French or Russian armies, the largest type of armed forces in the German army in 1914 was infantry, and its most elite regiments were the Guard regiments, and the traditions of forming such units in the Prussian army went back to the end of the 17th century. At the beginning of World War I, the German army served 11 regiments of the Gwardia infantry (the oldest of them was the 1st Regiment of the Foot Guard - German 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuss) and 8 Gwardia cavalry regimnets. These units formed the Guard Corps consisting of two infantry divisions (5 infantry brigades) and a cavalry division (4 cavalry brigades). In addition, there were relatively strong support units, including: 10 machine gun companies with 60 heavy machine guns, 30 artillery batteries with 144 field guns and 16 heavy cannons, as well as engineering and sapper units. At the beginning of World War I, the Guard Corps implemented the modernized Schlieffen plan and advanced through Belgium and northern France as part of the 2nd Army. The corps - under the command of General von Plattenberg - fought in the 1st Battle of the Marne and the 1st Battle of Ypres. He remained on the Western Front until the end of the Great War.
