American troops participating in World War I served in operations in Europe US Expeditionary Force American Expeditionary Forces), which was formed in July 1917, shortly after the US joined the Great War. Units of this Corps fought mainly on the Western Front, in France, with the German army. General John Pershing became the commander-in-chief of the American Expeditionary Forces. Of course, the core of these troops was infantry, but artillery also played a very important role. The American infantry division (totaling about 28,000 men!) Had 72 division guns - 48 75 mm guns and 24 155 mm guns, which in turn were divided into batteries. Due to the exponential growth of the US military, many types were either licensed or imported - primarily from France. Examples include the 75mm mle 1897 cannon, the 155mm Schneider mle1917 cannon, and the 155mm GPF mle1917 cannons. It is worth noting that the infantry subunits also used the 37 mm mle 1916 TR light gun. The American artillery was primarily to support its own infantry in attack or defense, but also to conduct counter-batter fire.
