"Great Escape" is a war film of an American production made in 1963 and directed by John Sturges. The same, who three years earlier (1960) made one of the most famous westerns, "Magnificent Seven". The basis for the "Great Escape" was a novel of the same title by Paul Brickhill, but also the true story of the flight of Allied pilots from Stalag Luft III near ¯agañ, which took place in March 1944. The film begins with attempts to reorganize the structure of POW camps for shot down Allied airmen, who are transferred to one collective camp. Thus, the Germans, completely unknowingly, gathered in one place the so-called organization X, an organization created by downed RAF pilots who intend to flee Stalag. The cast was made of many famous actors including Charles Bronson, James Cobrun and - starring - Steven McQueen as Captain Hilts.
