Prague Castle, also known as Prague Castle, is located in the Czech capital and is one of the most important architectural monuments of this country, serving a similar role to the Wawel Castle. The first mentions of a defensive structure on the site of today's castle date back to the end of the 9th century, but Spitygnev I, who reigned at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries, is considered to be the initiator of the construction of the actual castle in Prague, and therefore the ruler several dozen years earlier than the Polish Mieszko I. Brick churches, e.g. of St. George dating back to the beginning of the 10th century or the rotunda of St. Vitus Cathedral, which in 973 became the cathedral church and the most important religious building in the Czech Republic. A significant expansion of the complex in Prague took place in the 12th century during the reigns of Sobies³aw I and W³adys³aw II, and especially during the reign of Pøemysl Otakar II, when it gained incredible momentum. Unfortunately, in 1303 this magnificent building was severely damaged by a fire. The reconstruction of Hradczany, almost from the building shell, was initiated by the eminent Czech ruler - Charles IV of Luxembourg and lasted for a large part of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and in fact the works were completed only at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1344, the cornerstone was also laid for the cathedral of St. Greets. Further changes in Prague took place at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, when Rudolf II Habsburg founded another palace wing. During the reign of Maria Theresa (1740-1780), the castle was also rebuilt, which finally gave it its present shape to a great extent.
